Antiperspirants and deodorants are similar in the sense that they both have a sweet scent and makes us smell heavenly. Is that the only thing about them? Yeah — says the old me, and will swear that there are no difference between the two. These two, are entirely different because they target different problems. In this post, we will discuss the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant.
Antiperspirants are considered to be drugs because they treat or even prevent diseases that disrupts the function of the body. The active ingredient in antiperspirant is Aluminum chlorohydrate which helps in blocking sweat pores and reduces the amount of sweat coming out of the body, through the armpit. There are claims that these aluminum based products can cause breast cancer. However, these are all based on “hearsay evidence”. Research shows that only 0.0012% of aluminum chlorohydrate is absorbed, this is a negligible amount and is considered harmless.
Deodorants are designed to eliminate body odor. They are considered as cosmetics, for beautification. They make your skin acidic because they are alcohol based. This new acidic environment makes it unfavourable for bacteria to stay — thus eliminating odor. Since it has a sweet smell, it masks the odor creating sweet and fresh scent.
How to make your perfume last longer.
Naturally, sweat doesn’t smell. But the smell comes as a result of bacteria activity. Wait a minute ___ how did bacteria come in the first place? Our underams are a perfect warm habitat for bacteria, because it’s hidden and secretive so they automatically find it comfortable. Just like Petri dish in secondary schools labs. These bacteria eat moisture(sweat) from our armpit and the waste from their feeding is what cause the smell. It’s even worse when you have hair underneath. Note that it’s not only your underarms that sweats and smells this bad, but the nipple and groin area as well .( ladies, you know how it is down there and how your bra smells when you take it off). This is because, the apocrine glands in those areas are high in proteins, which is easier for bacteria to break down.
How to deal with body odor and excessive sweating
Depending on your problem, there are people who don’t sweat that much so antiperspirants are not really needed a deodorant will be just fine. But if you sweat buckets, then you definitely need an antiperspirant or both. In cases like hyperhidrosis which is a medical term for excessive sweating. There are people who sweat even when it’s not hot and antiperspirant don’t work for them. They suffer from hyperhidrosis. Botox injections are another alternative treatment for such conditions.
How botox injections work.
Botox injections works by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. When your body temperature rises your nervous system activates your sweat glands, and your body automatically cools itself. But for people with hyperhidrosis, the nerves that signals the sweat glands are overactive. When you take botox injection in your armpits, it inhibits your overactive nerve and makes them unable to send signals to your sweat glands.
Things you should know before taking botox injection.
Before taking any step to go for this treatment, you need to know that it can cost you an arm and a leg (very expensive). Do your research well, it must be done by an experienced practitioner. Results from botox injection can lasts from 6-13 months.
