Today, we are going to talk about the differences between two outfits which are jacket and coat. Even though some people think they are the same thing and call each one with any name that comes to mind, but technically, they aren’t the same thing. The only thing that people know and call a coat is raincoat, lols…. And all others are jackets. In this post, I will be sharing with you the differences between jacket and coat.
5 different ways to style a turtleneck top
A jacket is a piece of clothing worn on the top half of the body over a shirt, usually having sleeves or sleeveless and fastens down the front. It is always at the hip length. A jacket is usually lightweight because of the fabrics used and can be worn as an outer or middle layer. And this makes it easier to be worn in any temperature i.e warmer or slightly cooler temperatures.
The lightweight nature of jackets makes it more flexible in the fashion industry. Since they come in, leather, denim, bomb and Harrington jackets, many to mention but few. They are either the first layer or outer layer as they don’t have enough space for any layering outfit underneath because they are cut close to the body. The only thing it can create space for is a t-shirt ,a sleeveless top, or a tank top but definitely not a cardigan.
Coat is a piece of clothing that is worn over other clothes to keep warm or dry. They usually have sleeves, short or long. Coats are usually longer than jackets, i.e they pass the hip length and down to the knee and beyond.
Double breasted button trench coat.
Black fur coat
It is usually heavy because it is meant to keep you warm during colder temperatures and for that they always have sleeves. If you take a good look at coats, they are more classic, formal and used occasionally. They can be worn over other outerwears like suits and jackets. We have trench coats, fur coat, raincoat etc.
Another thing to observe between jackets and coats is the fastenings. For jackets, you will see a metallic zipper, or metallic button for denim/jean jackets and sometimes they neither have buttons nor zippers. For coats, you can see big round buttons or a toggle, and belts for trench coats.
